Our society and our economy are deeply invested in fossil fuels in so many ways. One way to begin to bring about change in that investment is to have pension funds divest from fossil fuels. Divestment is the process of halting investment in a certain sector. The California State Teacher Retirement System (CalSTRS) takes the money, the collective wealth, of teachers and schools, and invests some in fossil fuel industries. It is immoral to take the very wealth generated from educating the younger generation and invest it in a sector that is harming, and will only continue to harm, the very ecosystems these students will need in the future. CalSTRS divesting in fossil fuels NOW means they will not be held hostage to those industries as society tries to limit or halt the use of fossil fuels.

As a student, you can organize to inform your teachers of the choice they have in divestment. You can be an active part of the change that will occur. There are over 300,000 teachers in the state that need to hear about this, and if the CalSTRS Board heard the collective desire of the very teachers whose money they invest - CHANGE will occur. CalSTRS fossil fuel divestment is a concrete and important step that you can be a major part of. Sign the on-line petition, spread the word, educate your teachers, and educate your community.
