We owe our students an effort that reflects hope for their future. Divesting in fossil fuels is one very important step of many that need to happen to put us on a path to a better future for our students. As teachers and staff CalSTRS and CalPERS is our future, and it can help be a player in the future of our students by divesting from fossil fuels.
The debate on climate change is over. The amount of fossil fuels accessible by already-issued permits is enough to irreparably harm the planet. We either allow the harm or not. Continued exploration for new fossil fuel sources is like finding new carcinogens to feed to a cancer patient. Now is the time to say enough. We must find a better way. As teachers we owe it to our students' futures to do more than teach in the classroom...we teach through our actions.
